Nimeño II — born Christian Montcouquiol — was the first French-born matador to take the alternativa in Spain in the modern era, doing so in Nîmes in 1974. His career ended after a catastrophic goring in 1989 that left him with severe neurological damage; he died by suicide in 1991. The city's bullfighting identity is inseparable from him, which makes this souvenir note more locally specific than most in the EuroSouvenir programme.
Oberthur Fiduciaire printed the series using genuine banknote-grade stock and security features, giving the notes a feel that regularly fools the uninitiated.
