Albrecht Ludwig Berblinger — the "Tailor of Ulm" — attempted his famous glider flight over the Danube on 31 May 1811, crashed into the river in front of a crowd including King Frederick I of Württemberg, and was financially ruined by the spectacle. Rehabilitation came posthumously: modern aeronautical analysis confirmed his craft was probably airworthy, and the failure likely resulted from poor thermal conditions over the river that day rather than any fundamental design flaw.

The zero-euro souvenir format, produced under license by Oberthur Fiduciaire with genuine security features, has issued hundreds of regional and commemorative editions since 2015. Collectible by design, none carry legal tender status anywhere.
