The zero euro souvenir note program launched commercially in 2015 under the EuroSouvenir brand, with Oberthur Fiduciaire producing the notes to genuine euro-specification security standards — including the holographic strip — despite the denomination carrying no legal tender value anywhere. The program exploited a European Central Bank rule that places no restrictions on printing zero-value notes conforming to euro dimensions and design conventions, an elegant loophole that transformed museum gift shops into de facto note issuers.
The Musée du Cheval, housed in the Grande Écurie at Chantilly, was among the early institutional adopters in 2016. Collector demand for first-run issues from that year remains notably stronger than for later entries in the series.
