The Müngstener Brücke souvenir zero-euro note was issued in 2017 as part of the private collectible series that flooded European tourist markets after Oberthur Fiduciaire introduced the format. These notes carry legal-tender face value of zero — technically valid currency under European law, but practically worthless as a payment instrument, which is entirely the point. The series was a commercial venture, not a central bank initiative.
The Müngstener Brücke, spanning the Wupper river between Remscheid and Solingen, is the highest railway bridge in Germany at 107 meters — a reasonable subject for a commemorative piece, whatever one thinks of the format.
