The Musée de la Gendarmerie Nationale in Melun holds a collection that traces the corps from its origins as the Maréchaussée — a royal mounted constabulary whose judicial and police functions predate the Revolution. The zero-euro souvenir format, introduced commercially around 2015 through EuroSouvenir, gave institutions like this an unusually effective piece of self-funding merchandise: legal tender in denomination, worthless in practice, but printed to the full security standards of Oberthur Fiduciaire, the same contractor responsible for a significant portion of actual French banknote production.
Oberthur's Chantepie facility prints these to genuine fiduciary specification — UV-reactive inks, correct substrate — which is precisely the point.
