The Vallon des Auffes souvenir note belongs to the EuroSouvenir program launched in 2015, which licensed the official euro banknote design format — with ECB approval — for commemorative issues carrying a face value of zero. Oberthur Fiduciaire, one of France's principal security printers, produced the series using genuine banknote-grade paper and intaglio printing, giving these notes a tactile quality indistinguishable from circulating currency to the casual hand.

The Vallon des Auffes itself is a small 19th-century fishing inlet in Marseille, largely unchanged in structure since the calanque was cut off from expansion by the construction of the Corniche Kennedy road above it in the 1860s.
