The Fonserannes staircase lock at Béziers — nine chambers stepping down nearly 22 metres over 300 metres of canal — was engineered by Pierre-Paul Riquet and completed in 1680 as part of the Canal du Midi, itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. The zero-euro souvenir format was introduced by Oberthur Fiduciaire in 2015 as a legitimate collector vehicle, printed on genuine banknote stock with proper security features including a metallic strip. Legal tender for nothing, but not a novelty item either — the substrate and print quality meet the same specifications Oberthur applies to circulating currency contracts across multiple sovereign issuers.
