The Petit Train de la Rhune has operated since 1924, climbing the Pyrenean peak on the border of France and Spain using a rack-and-pinion system that has changed remarkably little since opening. The 0 Euro souvenir series, administered by the UEBN and printed by Oberthur Fiduciaire in Rennes, began in earnest around 2015 — producing legal-format notes with genuine security features but no redemption value, sold directly at tourist sites.
Oberthur's involvement gives these pieces better production quality than most souvenir paper, including UV-reactive elements lifted from genuine banknote manufacture.
