Philaposte — the philatelic arm of La Poste — began issuing these zero-denomination souvenir notes around 2017 as collectibles sold through post office counters and stamp fairs. They carry no legal tender status and were never intended to circulate, but Oberthur Fiduciaire produced them to full banknote specification, including security features, which is part of their commercial appeal to collectors who want the feel of currency without the monetary obligation attached.

The 2022 edition is one of several dozen themed variants Philaposte has released. Tracking the complete series has become a minor collecting discipline in itself.
