Kloster Lorsch — the Carolingian monastery in Hesse whose gatehouse is among the best-preserved examples of pre-Romanesque architecture north of the Alps — has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. The EuroSouvenir program, launched in 2015, produces these legal-denomination collector pieces under formal arrangements with the European Central Bank; they carry face value but are never intended for circulation, functioning instead as a licensed souvenir trade. Oberthur Fiduciaire, one of Europe's serious security printers, produces the physical notes to banknote specification — genuine intaglio printing, security thread, the works — which is part of what distinguishes this series from novelty items.
