La Montagne des Singes, near Kintzheim in Alsace, is a free-range reserve housing several hundred Barbary macaques — a species native to North Africa and the Atlas Mountains, not to France. The souvenir euro program, coordinated by the Union Européenne des Fabricants de Lingots, has issued hundreds of these zero-denomination pieces since the format was standardized around 2015, each tied to a specific tourist site.
