The 0 Euro souvenir note program — administered through a loose network of European tourist vendors and cultural institutions — has no legal tender status anywhere, but Finland's Kalevala issue stands out as one of the more considered releases in a series that is often artistically thin. These notes are produced by Oberthur Fiduciaire under license from the European Central Bank, which controls the design template and security specifications, including the genuine watermark embedded in the substrate.
The Kalevala, the Finnish national epic compiled by Elias Lönnrot from oral tradition and first published in 1835, gained its current 50-runo form in 1849. The 2022 issue coincides loosely with ongoing anniversaries surrounding Finnish cultural identity, though the souvenir note program does not require formal commemorative justification for individual releases.
