Jean de La Fontaine's 400th birth anniversary in 2021 prompted a wave of commemorative releases across France, and this souvenir zero sits squarely within that push. The EuroSouvenir program — a private scheme running since around 2015 — licenses the official euro format from the ECB under a strict agreement that mandates the zero denomination precisely to prevent any confusion with legal tender. Oberthur Fiduciaire, one of the same security printers that produces genuine euro notes for the Banque de France, handles production, which is why the paper and hologram feel entirely authentic.
Collectors should note that these zeros depreciate sharply once removed from their point-of-sale packaging.
