Jan Benigier was a Polish Righteous Among the Nations who, with his wife Antonina, sheltered Jewish families in the Kielce region during the German occupation. The 0 Euro souvenir program, run under European Central Bank licensing through Oberthur Fiduciaire, has become a significant vehicle for commemorating figures who receive little official recognition elsewhere — Benigier being a prime example of someone better known locally than nationally.
Małgorzata Pławecka-Jasek, a Polish designer, handled the artwork — an unusual assignment given that most souvenir Euro designs originate with French or pan-European studios working through Oberthur's standard pipeline.
