The EuroSouvenir program launched in 2015 as a licensed scheme allowing tourist sites across the eurozone to issue commemorative zero-denomination notes — legal in design but carrying no monetary value and never intended as currency. The Grotte de la Cocalière, a Gard department cave system discovered in 1964 and known for its unusually intact stalagmite formations, was among the earliest participating sites. Oberthur Fiduciaire printed the series at Rennes using genuine security paper, which gives these notes a feel indistinguishable from circulating issues — a deliberate choice that drives their collector appeal.
