The Grotte Chauvet 2 is a full-scale replica of the Chauvet-Pont d'Arc cave in Ardèche, opened in 2015 because the original — containing some of the oldest known cave paintings, dated to roughly 36,000 years ago — was permanently closed to the public after humidity and foot traffic caused irreversible damage at Lascaux. The souvenir zero-euro program, administered under license from the European Central Bank, began in 2015 and has since become a minor collecting discipline in its own right, with print runs and regional exclusivity determining secondary market value more than any design consideration.
Oberthur Fiduciaire's involvement lends these notes genuine security printing credentials — intaglio, microprinting, and a holographic stripe are standard across the series.
