The Galo de Barcelos — the rooster of Barcelos — is Portugal's most recognizable folk symbol, rooted in a medieval legend about a dead cockerel crowing to save an innocent pilgrim from the gallows. Whether the story is believed or not, the ceramic rooster became a mid-twentieth century export phenomenon, mass-produced for the tourist trade during the Salazar years as a soft-power emblem of Portuguese identity. That a French commemorative novelty program would eventually adopt it as subject matter is entirely predictable.
