Fort Breendonk was a Belgian SS detention and transit camp during the German occupation — one of the few such installations on Belgian soil, and the site of documented torture and executions between 1940 and 1944. It now operates as a national memorial. The choice to commemorate it on a souvenir zero-euro note is, depending on your view, either a sober act of public memory or a peculiar intersection of tourism and atrocity.
Oberthur produced the full EuroSouvenir series to genuine banknote specification, with security features intact despite zero legal tender status anywhere.
