Ehrenbreitstein fortress, perched above the Rhine at Koblenz, is one of the largest preserved fortifications in Europe — a Prussian rebuilding completed in 1832 on foundations that had been deliberately destroyed by French forces in 1801 to prevent its recapture. The EuroSouvenir programme, administered through licensed retailers at tourist sites, has issued these zero-denomination notes since 2015 as a collector item and revenue stream for cultural institutions. Oberthur Fiduciaire, historically a major supplier of genuine currency to francophone Africa and elsewhere, produces them to banknote specification — real security paper, real hologram — which is precisely the point of the format's appeal.
