Elvas is one of the better choices in the Portuguese EuroSouvenir roster — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012, recognized specifically for its fortifications, the largest surviving system of star fort defenses in the world. The souvenir note format, introduced around 2015 and produced exclusively by Oberthur Fiduciaire under license from the ECB, requires a genuine security-printed substrate with polymer thread, which is why these retail for several euros despite carrying no monetary value whatsoever.
The Alentejo designation distinguishes it from other Elvas issues, as the town has appeared on multiple regional and thematic EuroSouvenir releases.
