Obverse description Central vignette of two traditionally dressed Cretan men — one performing a high-kick dance step, the other standing beside a large lute (laouto) — set against a guilloche underprint in lavender and gold tones. An outline map of Crete appears in the lower centre, flanked by a large '0' numeral at left and a ring of EU stars. The EU flag medallion is at upper left, with the series code '2022-1' alongside.

Reverse description Standard EuroSouvenir reverse with vignettes of six celebrated European landmarks: Brandenburg Gate, Belém Tower, Eiffel Tower, Colosseum, Sagrada Família, and Manneken-Pis, arranged across the note on a multicolour guilloche underprint. A reproduction of the Mona Lisa portrait occupies the right portion, with the '0 EURO' denomination block at lower right and printer's imprint below.

Comments

EuroSouvenir notes occupy an odd niche — legal in design terms because the zero denomination places them outside EU counterfeiting statutes, yet produced to the same security printing standards as circulating currency. Oberthur Fiduciaire, which prints genuine banknotes for multiple central banks, runs these on the same substrate and with the same intaglio discipline as their sovereign contracts. The Crete edition is part of a broader Greek tourism series issued in 2022, signed by R. Faille in his capacity as EuroSouvenir's authorizing signatory rather than any central bank governor.
