The souvenir zero euro series, produced under licence from the European Central Bank and printed by Oberthur in Rennes, began gaining serious collector traction around 2015. Centre des Monuments Nationaux issues them as paid souvenirs at heritage sites — the face value is real and ECB-compliant, but no central bank will ever redeem one. The Colonne de la Grande Armée, the 53-metre Napoleonic victory column at Wimille near Boulogne-sur-Mer, was erected to commemorate the Army of England encampment of 1803–1805, when Napoleon massed roughly 180,000 troops there in preparation for an invasion of Britain that never came.
Oberthur's inclusion of a genuine hologram strip keeps these within standard euro security specifications despite the zero denomination.
