Civita di Bagnoregio — the dying city, as Italians call it — is a medieval hilltop settlement in Lazio accessible only by a single pedestrian bridge, its tufa foundations eroding so rapidly that permanent population has dwindled to fewer than a dozen year-round residents. Italy nominated it repeatedly for UNESCO World Heritage status before finally succeeding in 2023.
