Vaux-le-Vicomte is inseparable from one of the most spectacular acts of political self-destruction in French history: Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV's finance minister, threw an inauguration fête there in August 1661 so lavish — 6,000 guests, fireworks, a Molière premiere — that the king had him arrested three weeks later on embezzlement charges and imprisoned for life. The château that got Fouquet destroyed went on to directly inspire Versailles, as Louis poached the same architect, landscaper, and decorator to build something larger.
