Vaux-le-Vicomte has a particular claim on French monetary history that few souvenir notes can match: it was the private château of Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV's finance minister, whose 1661 arrest — ordered by the king partly out of envy at the estate's grandeur — directly preceded the creation of Versailles. Colbert replaced him, and the state's financial architecture shifted permanently.
Oberthur Fiduciaire printing the zero-euro souvenir series is a neat irony — one of France's oldest security printers, producing notes with no legal tender value whatsoever, for a site that once embodied the catastrophic personal cost of too much financial ambition.
