The 0 euro souvenir note program, administered through participating cultural sites and printed by Oberthur Fiduciaire to European Central Bank security specifications, has no legal tender status anywhere — France included. The Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux entry in this series is one of hundreds of site-specific issues that began proliferating after 2015, when the commercial model proved unexpectedly durable among collectors and tourists willing to pay three to five euros for a note worth none.
Castelnau-Bretenoux, a Lot medieval fortress under Centre des Monuments Nationaux stewardship since 1932, was bequeathed to the state by the tenor Jean Mouliérat, who spent decades restoring it after purchasing the ruin in 1896.
