The Château d'If souvenir euro is part of a broader novelty program administered by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, which licenses the zero-denomination format to heritage sites across France as a visitor revenue mechanism. These notes have no legal tender status whatsoever — they are printed to euro-series specifications purely to exploit the format's familiarity. Oberthur Fiduciaire, one of the few security printers with genuine banknote credentials in France, produces them at Rennes, which gives the physical object a credibility its face value does not support.
The fortress on the Frioul archipelago near Marseille owes most of its modern recognition to Dumas rather than to its actual history as a state prison, and that literary association is almost certainly the primary draw for the souvenir market.
