Souvenir euros are a collector's curiosity that occupy an odd legal grey zone — they carry a face value of zero, which means they cannot circulate as currency, but they are printed to the same technical standards as genuine euro banknotes and must comply with ECB regulations on banknote-resembling items. Oberthur Fiduciaire, which prints real currency for multiple central banks, handles the production under those constraints.
La Cité du Vin opened in Bordeaux in 2016 and became one of the better-performing cultural attractions in southwestern France. This 2019 issue was sold on-site as merchandise.
