The Euro Souvenir program, launched in 2015 by a French private company operating under license, produces these zero-denomination notes as paid collectibles sold at tourist attractions across Europe. They are legal curiosities — printed on genuine banknote paper by Oberthur Fiduciaire, one of the same security printers that produces real euro notes for several EU member states, yet they carry no monetary value and no issuing central bank.
The BMW Museum edition was released for the Munich site in 2019. Oberthur's involvement gives these souvenirs a tactile authenticity that distinguishes them sharply from ordinary printed ephemera — the paper, the intaglio-style printing, and the security features are real production-grade work, not simulation.
