Berck-sur-Mer's souvenir zero euro was issued under the Eurosouvenirs scheme launched in 2015, which licensed the euro banknote format from the European Central Bank for commemorative use — provided the face value of zero rendered them legally non-negotiable tender. Oberthur Fiduciaire produced the series using genuine security printing techniques, including intaglio, which means these notes feel identical to circulating currency while being worth exactly nothing as money.
Berck is a coastal town in Pas-de-Calais historically known for its tuberculosis sanatoriums, which attracted patients from across Europe in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries partly due to its unusually dry sea air. That medical history is rarely acknowledged in the tourist literature that now surrounds the town.
