The Battle of Aljubarrota, fought on 14 August 1385, secured João I's claim to the Portuguese throne against Castilian forces under Juan I — a decisive enough victory that it effectively ended serious Castilian ambitions over Portugal for generations. The souvenir zero-euro program, launched by EuroSouvenir in 2015, has used historical anniversaries and landmarks as its hook, with Oberthur Fiduciaire producing the notes to the same security specifications as genuine euro issues: intaglio printing, UV-reactive fibres, and a genuine serial number.

The 2021 release coincides with the 636th anniversary. Legally not tender anywhere, but manufactured to a standard that makes them indistinguishable in hand from circulating notes.
