The Bataille de Gergovie souvenir note commemorates the 52 BC engagement in which Vercingetorix repelled Caesar's legions — one of the few Roman defeats during the Gallic Wars, and a battle whose exact site remained disputed by archaeologists well into the twentieth century, with the plateau near Clermont-Ferrand only achieving broad scholarly consensus relatively recently.

Oberthur Fiduciaire produced the note under the EuroSouvenir program, which issues legal-face-value zero-denomination pieces sold as collector items at tourist sites across Europe. The face value is technically zero euros, valid nowhere as tender, but printed to genuine banknote security standards — a quirk that gives these notes a production pedigree far exceeding their monetary function.
