Slovakia's souvenir zero euro program has leaned hard into regional identity, and this Banská Bystrica issue addresses two things the city is genuinely known for: its medieval copper trade, which made it one of the wealthiest towns in Central Europe under the Thurzo-Fugger mining partnership of the late 15th and early 16th centuries, and the Slovak National Uprising of August 1944, for which the city served as the operational headquarters until German forces retook it in October of that year.
