The Euro Souvenir program — launched in 2015 and formally licensed under European Central Bank guidelines — permits the production of zero-denomination collector notes that share the physical security features of genuine euro banknotes but carry no monetary value and cannot be tendered as payment. Oberthur Fiduciaire, one of the few security printers in Europe authorized to handle genuine euro production, manufactures the series, which lends the notes a degree of technical credibility well above typical souvenir paper.

The AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix at the Nürburgring is one of the oldest historic motorsport events in Europe, having run since 1974 under the Automobilclub von Deutschland's organization. The Nürburgring Nordschleife's particular hold on collector culture — and on the older racing classes the event features — makes this a natural pairing for the format.
