These notes are legal tender in theory, worthless in exchange in practice, and sold at a markup — typically €3 to €5 — directly to tourists at the site depicted. The Arènes de Nîmes, one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres still standing, makes an obvious candidate for the series.
