The 0 euro souvenir series launched in France in 2015 as a joint venture between the UEAB and participating tourist sites — each note licensed to a specific venue, sold as a keepsake, and legal in denomination only in the loosest sense. Oberthur Fiduciaire produced them to genuine banknote specification: intaglio printing, security thread, proper cotton substrate. The decision to use actual fiduciary-grade production was deliberate, aimed at collectors who would reject anything that felt like a postcard.
The Château royal d'Amboise was among the first sites to participate, which put this particular note at the origin of what became a surprisingly durable secondary market.
