Arleux, a small commune in the Nord department, has held an annual garlic fair — the Fête de l'Ail Fumé — since the 1960s, celebrating a smoked garlic variety with genuine AOC recognition since 2013. The fumage process, using peat smoke over several days, is specific to the Douaisis region and produces a product meaningfully different from ordinary dried garlic. Oberthur printed the wider 0 Euro souvenir series under license from the European Central Bank, which granted tolerance for these collector pieces provided they carry no legal tender status and are clearly distinguished from circulating notes.
