The Ahrtal souvenir zero euro was issued in 2020, the same year catastrophic flooding struck the Ahr valley — though the note predates the July 2021 disaster that killed over 130 people and destroyed much of the infrastructure along the river. That timing gives surviving examples a certain unintended weight, issued at the precise moment before the region became internationally known for tragedy rather than wine tourism.
Oberthur's involvement guarantees genuine security printing — these carry the same UV-reactive features and intaglio elements used on circulating currency, which is the whole point of the EuroSouvenir program's appeal to collectors.
