Euro Souvenir notes are a private commemorative series distributed through tourism channels and carry no legal tender status anywhere. This 2021 issue marks the 60th anniversary of Benfica's back-to-back European Cup victories in 1961 and 1962 — the club's only two continental titles, both won under Béla Guttmann, the Hungarian coach who famously cursed the club after being denied a raise following the second win. Whether the curse is folklore or not, Benfica has reached the final six times since without lifting the trophy.
Oberthur Fiduciaire's involvement lends the piece genuine security printing credentials, with a real security thread and UV-reactive inks — unusual for what is, functionally, a souvenir.
