The 0 Euro souvenir note program, administered by EuroSouvenir and printed by Oberthur Fiduciaire in France, launched in 2015 as a collector-driven novelty with legal face value of zero — technically valid currency that can never buy anything. This example commemorates the 1,850th anniversary of the Porta Nigra, the late Roman city gate at Trier dating to roughly 170 AD, making Trier one of the oldest cities in Germany and a logical subject for a series built entirely around heritage tourism.
Oberthur's involvement gives these notes genuine security printing credentials — the hologram strip is production-grade, not decorative — which is partly why the souvenir series gained traction with collectors who might otherwise dismiss the concept.
