Oberthur has printed the bulk of the European souvenir zero-euro series since the format was commercialized around 2015, and this note marking Hofmannsthal's 150th birth anniversary follows that production model exactly — a licensed collectible with no circulation function, sold as a cultural memento. Hofmannsthal died in 1929, two days after his son's suicide, and never saw the full reception of the libretti he wrote for Richard Strauss, including Der Rosenkavalier and Elektra, which outlasted nearly everything else in the Viennese fin-de-siècle canon.
