These zero-euro souvenir notes are produced by the EAEB (European Association for Euro Banknotes) — a private French company with no monetary authority — and sold directly to tourists and collectors. Oberthur Fiduciaire prints them to genuine euro-series security standards, including the correct paper feel and UV-reactive ink, which is precisely what makes them interesting as objects: all the machinery of legitimate currency production applied to something with no face value whatsoever.
This example marks the centenary of the Austrian Republic proclaimed in November 1918 following the collapse of the Habsburg Empire.
