Romania's National Bank issued a commemorative zero-denomination note honoring Emil Racoviță, the Transylvanian-born biologist who joined the Belgica expedition of 1897–99 — the first scientific voyage to overwinter in Antarctica. The zero denomination is a deliberate device used by several central banks to produce legally issued collector pieces that carry no transactional value and therefore sidestep the regulatory complications of circulating currency.

Racoviță later founded the world's first speleology institute in Cluj in 1920, a fact that distinguishes him as something other than a standard portrait candidate for this kind of issue.
