| Opmerkingen |
Buchenwald camp scrip was issued by the SS garrison canteen — not for prisoner use, but for SS personnel stationed at the camp. The system prevented regular Reichsmark from circulating within the perimeter, a security and accounting measure common to SS installations. Prisoners were issued separate, more restricted scrip under different series.
Campbell 3951 is among the earlier-dated Buchenwald issues. Post-war survival rates for this material are complicated by the fact that Allied forces arrived at Buchenwald on 11 April 1945 — some scrip was seized as evidence, some destroyed, some pocketed as souvenirs by liberating soldiers.
