Opmerkingen

Torrelameu is a small municipality in the Noguera comarca of Lleida, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own fractional emergency currency when silver and copper coinage disappeared almost entirely from circulation in 1936–37. The Republican government's inability to supply small change at the local level forced municipalities down to a few hundred inhabitants to become, briefly, their own monetary authorities.

The Imprenta Unió Obrera in nearby Balaguer — a workers' collective print shop, as the name makes plain — produced notes for several area municipalities during this period. The thick card stock was a practical choice; it lasted longer in daily hand-to-hand use than thin paper.
