San Ginés de Vilasar — now known as Canet de Mar — was one of dozens of Catalan municipalities where consumer cooperatives issued their own fractional scrip during the 1930s, filling a gap left by the chronic shortage of small-denomination coinage that plagued the Republic even before the Civil War began. La Fraternal's issues are among the more obscure in the Altés catalogue, with surviving pieces suggesting very limited print runs intended purely for internal use among cooperative members.
The thick card stock was a deliberate choice — cooperative scrip of this type needed to survive repeated handling in a shop environment without disintegrating, and conventional banknote paper was neither available nor appropriate at this scale.
