Llombay is a small municipality in the Valencia region, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, its municipal council issued emergency fractional currency in 1937 to address the near-total disappearance of small coins from circulation. The Republican government's inability to supply adequate coinage to rural communities forced this improvisation at the most local administrative level imaginable — a village council printing its own half-peseta notes.
The Gari Monetary catalogue documents these Valencian municipal emissions in detail; the 854 series covers Llombay specifically. Surviving examples are scarce simply because production quantities for villages of this size were tiny, and most notes were redeemed or discarded once the crisis passed.
