Lezuza is a small municipality in Albacete province, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, its local council issued emergency fractional currency when coins vanished from circulation almost overnight in the summer of 1936. The Republican government's inability to supply small change to rural areas forced municipal councils — often with no printing infrastructure whatsoever — to improvise with whatever materials were at hand.
At roughly postage-stamp dimensions, this note was almost certainly produced locally, possibly on office stock, with a handstamp serving as the sole anti-counterfeiting measure. The Gari Morera catalogue variant designation 818A-A implies at least one known sub-variety, likely a handstamp color or ink difference.
