Falset is a small town in the Priorat comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of Spanish municipalities during the Civil War, its local council issued emergency fractional currency when the Republic's central supply of small change collapsed in 1937. These municipal notes — collectively known as "guerra civil locals" — were produced in the tens of thousands of distinct types across Catalonia, Aragon, and Valencia, largely because the hoarding of metal coins had created an acute shortage that no central authority moved quickly enough to fix.
Turró's cataloguing of this series remains the standard reference, and the Falset emissions are among the more obscure entries in it — the town's small population meant limited print runs and correspondingly low survival rates.
