During the Spanish Civil War, the collapse of small-denomination coinage prompted hundreds of local bodies — municipalities, trade unions, cooperatives — to issue their own emergency fractional currency. This piece comes from the U.G.T.-affiliated hotel and catering workers of Castellón, one of the more unusual issuing entities in the Valencian region. The U.G.T. (Unión General de Trabajadores) was the Socialist trade union federation, and its local industry branches occasionally issued scrip valid within their own commercial networks.
